Upstage Violence: Using Theatre Skills to Raise Sexual Assault Awareness
Saturday, November 14, 2015
10-11:30am
Studio Theatre (Basement of Cathedral of Learning)
Facilitated by Dr. Deirdre O’Rourke
Open to all theatre students at Pitt, CMU, and Point Park
This 1.5 hr. workshop demonstrates how theatre and performance tools can assist theatre students in 1) raising their awareness and understanding of sexual assault, 2) serving as advocates for friends and loved ones affected by sexual assault, and 3) challenging fellow theatre artists to make socially-conscious art. In the first hour, participants unpack sexual assault myths and scenarios by using exercises learned in acting, script analysis, and performance criticism classes. Students will also gain a brief introduction to advocacy training and an understanding of how advocacy skills, such as active listening, intersect with theatre skills. In the last half hour, the workshop switches gears and asks participants to think critically about how performances they see and enact engage violence against women. The workshop concludes with opportunities for personal and group reflection.
